Envisioning the integration of family and work: Toward a kinder, gentler workplace
Article Abstract:
It is argued that the institutionalisation of job cultures which are not responsive to the child care responsibilities of workers is responsible for the wage gap among women with and without children. Women not involved in reproduction and community building tend to benefit from improved opportunities. An ideal solution would be for businesses to acknowledge workers' responsibilities to familial care and community building and assume some responsibility towards reproduction through worker protection, working conditions and wages.

Reconsidering the "choice": do Americans really prefer the workplace over home?
Article Abstract:
Arlie Russell Hochschild's book, 'The Time Bind: When Work Becomes Home and Home Becomes Work,' is a deviation from an earlier argument that she presented in her other book, 'The Second Shift.' In 'The Time Bind,' Hochschild argued that American families are struggling to balance work and family life. Increased economic pressure are forcing men and women to abandon the home to focus more on the workplace. Corporations respond by creating a homey atmosphere in the workplace while homelife increasingly become more like work.

Envisioning a 'Third Way': The welfare state in the twenty-first century
Article Abstract:
The future of the welfare state is expected to change in response to the current success of the US economy, which boasts almost total employment, healthy stockmarkets and increased wages for low-earners. The 'Third Way' was popularised by British prime minister Tony Blair, encouraging lone parents to turn to the market for an income. An overview of the Third Way is given.
