Fostering self-change among problem drinkers: a proactive community intervention
Article Abstract:
A community-based intervention designed to promote self-change for persons unlikely to seek professional help or treatment for their drinking problem is introduced. It is compatible with an effective public health care approach wherein persons are offered an intervention that is the least intrusive yet has a considerable chance of success. It considers the three factors associated with drinkers who do not seek formal help, namely, social stigma, desire to change on their own and lack of popular belief that self-change will lead to recovery.

The results of 61 alcohol treatment studies published from 1989 to 1993 are used to review the effectiveness of existing methodologies. Some of the studies, which used pre-treatment characteristics, conventional methodologies and experimental techniques, have come up with favorable results. However, results of some of the studies, particularly those which involved data from numerous sources, showed deviations from some conventional methodologies.

Reliability of a drug history questionnaire (DHQ)
Article Abstract:
A study, using a drug history questionnaire, of the test-retest reliability of drug abusers' reports of lifetime drug use, demographic and drug-related events revealed the reliable nature of drug abusers' self-evaluation reports. Such self-assessment reports are much-needed to shape the course of clinical and research strategies.
