Global society
Article Abstract:
Benjamin R. Barber's book 'Jihad vs. McWorld' explores two antithetical international trends. While 'Jihad' involves regional separation and division based on parochial ethnic, racial or religions allegiances, 'McWorld' describes the globalization of the economic market and, consequently, popular culture. Barber also addresses a third trend that is being crushed between these two conflicting forces, namely the trend toward democracy.

Mobilizing for change in a social movement society
Article Abstract:
It is argued that social movements tend to be produced by changing political opportunities, the development of a collective identity, and indigenous social networks. The US is identified as a social movement society and it is suggested that in the future, social movements are likely to become routine; with social movement networks providing identity, meaning and community; and fostering multicultural citizenship.

Doing anti-racism: Toward an egalitarian American society
Article Abstract:
It is argued that racism in North America spans four centuries. Since the seventeenth century, whites are claimed to have dominated Americans of colour, denying them opportunities, privileges, positions and dignity. While it is acknowledged that coloured Americans may participate in some white racism, it is themselves that are the target of oppression and discrimination.
