Meeting mental health needs of older people: policy and practice issues for social work
Article Abstract:
Mental health services for the old people have suffered from several barriers which resulted from the lack of understanding of the service delivery requirements due to misinformations about aging and mental health. On the other hand, policies and service deliveries have suffered setbacks due to lack of leadership, overreliance on inpatient treatment, and lack of parity with physical health care and delivery systems. To address these issues, the traditional advocacy role of social work should incorporate coalition building to optimize the limited resources available.

Sociocultural status, psychosocial factors, and cognitive functional limitation in elderly Mexican Americans: findings from the San Antonio Longitudinal Study of Aging
Article Abstract:
A study that sought to identify the psychosocial variables that correlate with cognitive function in Mexican American elderly was conducted. Some Mexican American elders belonging to a single community were singled out for the study, which employed the Disablement Process model as basis for the examination of the link between psychosocial factors and cognitive function. Findings showed that elderly Mexican Americans with low educational levels or low levels of assimilation increase their risk of cognitive functional limitation.
