Popular performance and the construction of social reality in post-Amin Uganda
Article Abstract:
Ugandan leader Idi Amin's opposition to Western power, particularly to the British Empire, gained for him the status of a hero among Ugandans. The period after Amin was characterized with social turmoil with women and orphans as the main victims. A contemporary popular performance genre also developed within this period. This genre was rooted in a multi-ethnic folk tradition that depicted the reality of the past. Among the forms of this genre were traveling musicians, musical performance groups and radio dramas.

Watching films, learning language, and experiencing culture: An account of deaf culture through history and popular films
Article Abstract:
The validity of sign language and proof of distinct culture would not be necessary as developing an awareness of another culture aids in the creation of a consciousness that distinct cultures coexist, if society were to recognize the medical condition of deafness as separate from Deafness as a culture. This realization leads to greater understanding and appreciation of differences, reducing the strength of the cynical belief that unity results from sameness.
