Postpartum amenorrhea in Ethiopia: the role of weaning, child death, and socioeconomic factors
Article Abstract:
An examination of the effects of weaning, child death, and socioeconomic factors on pastpartum amenorrhea in Ethiopia reaffirms the already established relationship between breastfeeding and resumption of postpartum menses. Discrete-time hazards analyses also revealed that child death has the strongest effect on resumption of menses, while weaning has a significant positive effect. For both variables, however, the effect diminishes over time. Subgroups of women with significantly different risks of returning to menses, despite breastfeeding, have also been identified.

Breastfeeding behavior and infant survival with emphasis on reverse causation bias: some evidence from Nigeria
Article Abstract:
This article examines the breastfeeding of unhealthy infants and their chances of survival in Nigeria. The authors maintain sick infants are often weaned earlier than healthy infants to to problems of suckling and have a much higher chance of dying, which is due to a combination of early weaning and their illness.
