Pregrouping aggression and defense scores influences alcohol consumption for dominant and subordinate rats in visible burrow systems
Article Abstract:
Voluntary alcohol consumption in male rats is increased by subordination stress. Adult male rats with high pregrouping attack scores were placed in visible burrow systems (VBS) and assessed by cat odor and open field tests. Pregrouping defense scores did not predict subordination but the scores corresponded with altered subordinate pre-postgrouping scores for voluntary ethanol consumption. Postgrouping ethanol intake by subordinate rats corresponded with pregrouping attacks on adult intruders. Alcohol consumption for dominant and subordinate rats in VBS, therefore, is influenced by pregrouping aggression and defense scores.

Responses of dominant and subordinate male rats to the odors of male and female conspecifics
Article Abstract:
Animals use odors to mark its surroundings and to identify animals other than itself. A study was conducted based on the resident-intruder paradigm to determine the influence of dominance and recognition on rats' preferences for odor and urine-marking. Resident males were observed to mark more over the odor of males and familiar females compared to intruders. On the other hand, intruders marked more on the odors of those of an unfamiliar male and less over those of familiar males. These results have significant implications for understanding the role of olfactory learning in interactions involving aggression.
