Situational determinants of alcohol abuse among Caucasian and African-American college students
Article Abstract:
A significant gender effect on alcohol consumption, with men having higher alcohol consumption than women, was found in a study of gender, race and binge status differences in alcohol consumption among Caucasian and African-American college students. Situational differences as qualified by the race of binge drinkers were also examined. Findings showed no significant main effect of race on alcohol use. Caucasian binge drinkers had substantially higher interpersonal problem behavior scores compared to African-American binge drinkers, while binge-drinking African-Americans had higher intrapersonal problem behavior scores than did Caucasian binge drinkers.

Psychiatric symptoms in polysubstance abusers: relationship to race, sex, and age
Article Abstract:
A study, using the Symptoms Check List 90R, of the association between the psychiatric symptoms and the race, sex, and age factors in opium addicts undergoing detoxication revealed considerable influence due to race differences. The finding emphasizes the importance for treatment planning. Afro American substance abusers experienced substantially lower psychiatric symptoms on a majority of the scales than did their white counterparts.

Alcohol expectancies and changes in beer consumption of first-year college students
Article Abstract:
A study of the drinking habits of 154 first-year college students revealed all subscales of the Alcohol Expectancy Questionnaire to be directly correlated to their beer intake rates, which were significantly higher for the male subjects. This reveals direct correlations between alcohol expectancies and the progression of beer consumption in the subjects.
