Structural adjustment programmes and the problem of urban poverty: an African perspective
Article Abstract:
The problem of urban poverty in South Africa is related to the social work profession in terms of awareness promotion regarding the negative effects of structural adjustment programs on the poor and their welfare. The issue of poverty is mediated by both external and internal factors which were extensively felt during the economic crisis of the late 1970s. Many African countries are compelled to implement the structural adjustment programs recommended by the IMF. The three primary strategies involved in the programs are reforms on fiscal and monetary policies, trade liberalization and deregulation of domestic monopolies.
