Haitian refugees
Article Abstract:
The US government has repatriated a total of 26,269 Haitians since November, 1992. This was in accordance to an executive order issued by Pres George Bush on May 24, 1992, banning the entry of Haitians to the US mainland. However, a Federal appeals court in NY has successfully nullified Pres Bush's order. The court maintained that the refugees must first be thoroughly screened to determine their reason for escaping before they could be sent back to their country. Meanwhile, some officials argue that such move could encourage the resumption of massive migration of Haitians to the US.

The never ending story: the Haitian boat people
Article Abstract:
The number of Haitian refugees seeking to migrate to the US has been increasing steadily despite Pres George Bush's policy of forced repatriation of these refugees. The situation can be attributed to deteriorating economic and political conditions in Haiti, made even worse by the Sep 1992 coup which ousted Pres Jean-Bertrand Aristide from office. The US originally hoped that Caribbean camps would be able to hold most of the refugees. However, with the large number of refugees, the government has decided on a policy of forced repatriation.
