Article Abstract:
The interdependence of politics and organized crime has become clearly established. Some of the salient features of this relationship include the requirement of political connections for long-term criminal organizations, unitary states' tendencies in fostering organized crime, the prevalence of secret societies, and criminals widely regarded as cultural heroes.

Article Abstract:
Cartels financed by the sale of illegal drugs were politically prominent in Colombia during the 1990s, leading to possible negative economic growth. Extensive traffic in heroin, cocaine, and other illegal drugs has produced complex, subtle relationships among Colombian guerrillas, police, army, paramilitary groups, government bureaucracy, and the US.

Italy has made significant attempts to denounce and eradicate connections between politicians and organized crime during the first half of the 1990s. Mafia influence at the national level has been consistently reduced, yet such connections remain strong in regions such as Calabria and Sicily.
