The politics of drug policy: deja vu all over again
Article Abstract:
Three books address the problems associated with drug control policy and conclude that the Ronald Reagan and George Bush eras were characterized by a tough stance directed at the wrong people, and as a result the existing policy fails to effectively address addiction, public health, social welfare and crime. The US, in an effort to oppose communism, has purposely sabotaged the objectives of global drug control by establishing an implicit partnership with key traffickers. The tightening of regulations concerning drugs has transformed the passive use value-centered dealing to an aggressive exchange value-centered network.

Refletive Modernization: Politics, Tradition and Aesthetics in the Modern Social Order
Article Abstract:
The need for social science to shift to reconstructive modernity is discussed in 'Reflexive Modernization: Politics, Tradition and Aesthetics in the Modern Social Order,' by Ulrich Beck, Anthony Giddens and Scott Lash and 'Critique of Modernity' by Alain Touraine. Under reflexive modernization, people have become increasingly aware of specialized knowledge that liberate them from the structures fixed by society. However, this increased consciousness poses as a threat to the family and to various social groups.
