Why social work? Comparative perspectives on social issue and response formation
Article Abstract:
Understanding how societies symbolize social issues and responses to them enhances the social work profession. Symbolizations of social issues and responses offer a way to analyze mechanisms within economic and political situations and within the politics of social work. Analyses allow social work organizations to develop strategies that are appropriate and acceptable to a certain type of society.

Social work education's cultural hegemony
Article Abstract:
An argument is presented that the forces of globalization may allow powerful cultures to dominate the less powerful through social work education. Therefore, in international policy-making for social work and social work education, it is important to avoid cultural hegemony and correct pressures towards it and that educators may, in their everyday practice, also make a contribution.
