Winning isn't everything: competition, achievement orientation, and intrinsic motivation
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze J.M. Harackiewicz and C. Sansone's process framework of intrinsic motivation in a competitive context. The influence of competition and achievement orientation on intrinsic motivation was examined. Results indicated that achievement orientation moderated the effects of competition. Findings also showed a number of mediators of competition and feedback effects on intrinsic motivation. These include perceived challenge, eagerness, competence valuation and positive affect.
