Within-session response patterns on conjoint variable-interval variable-time schedules

Article Abstract:

Previous research has shown that the rate of operant responding often changes within sessions, even when factors such as the rate of reinforcement remain unchanged. To determine whether within-session changes are affected by the total number of reinforcers delivered during the session or only by the reinforcers earned by the operant response, four rats and three pigeons are studied for their reinforcement behavior using a conjoint variable-interval variable-time schedule. Results indicate that response-independent reinforcers can affect within-session pattern of responding.

Within-session response rates when reinforcement rate is changed within each session

Article Abstract:

A study of rat psychology shows that responding rates change within the session in baseline conditions, though the changes are not as significant as observed in earlier studies. When rats are used, R.J. Herrnstein's hyperbolic equation that explains the relation between the rate of responding and rate of reinforcement, are observed. However, Herrnstein's equation did not offer a proper description when pigeons were used for experiments.

Behavioral economics and within-session changes in responding

Article Abstract:

Using behavioral economic theories, researchers study the effects of within-session response rates on rats and pigeons. The relationship between fixed-ratio schedules and response rate changes is analyzed.
