Maine is the most heavily forested state in the US, but aggressive timber practices such as clear cutting threaten the pristine nature of Maine's forests. Environmentalists are working to get a referendum on the fall 1996 ballot that would limit clear cutting and establish ecological reserves.

The third annual National Trails Day on June 3, 1995 is a chance for all trail users to organize grassroots efforts to support trail programs. The American Hiking Society will be recruiting 1 million volunteers to make up for diminishing federal support.
