A murky situation

Backpackers face real threats such as giardia and Cryptosporidium if they do not filter their water. The water filter industry has confusing standards that make purchasing a good filter difficult. Backpacker magazine tested seven of the most popular filters. The results are in this issue.

Close to 1,000 people submitted entries in Backpacker magazine's 'Be a Gear Tester Contest,' and three experienced and articulate backpackers were chosen. Equipment editor Kristin Hostetter says the trip was a success, and she is looking forward to next year's contest.
