Carbohydrates consumed before or during exercise reduce the tryptophan that goes to the brain during exercise, thus reducing brain fatigue. Runners should get enough rest, avoid fasting and avoid high-fat foods. Brain chemistry and specific foods are discussed.

Sports drinks are superior to plain water for fluid replacement for runners because they replace lost water and lost electrolytes and give muscles a needed boost of glycogen. They work faster, taste better, and give the body needed energy and minerals.
