Beating the brain drain: why you need to fuel your head as well as your muscles

Article Abstract:

Carbohydrates consumed before or during exercise reduce the tryptophan that goes to the brain during exercise, thus reducing brain fatigue. Runners should get enough rest, avoid fasting and avoid high-fat foods. Brain chemistry and specific foods are discussed.

Futuristic fluids

Article Abstract:

Sports drinks are superior to plain water for fluid replacement for runners because they replace lost water and lost electrolytes and give muscles a needed boost of glycogen. They work faster, taste better, and give the body needed energy and minerals.

The most efficient method of burning calories and reducing body fat is through a high-intensity exercise, such as running. The effectiveness of so-called 'fat-burning' products and diet fads, such as the '40-30-30' diet, is largely unproven.
