Bombed in Bass Strait

A sudden storm with hurricane winds surprised the 115 sailboats participating in the Telstra Sydney-Hobart Race as they entered Bass Strait. The storm moved from west to southeast and had the strongest impact in the middle, causing only 44 boats to finish the race.

The three-hulled speedster Yellow Pages Endeavor set a world sailing speed record for nonwindsurfers of 44.654 knots in Feb 1993. Designer Lindsay Cunningham hopes to beat the 44.66-knot record seat by a boardsailer.
