Boot camp: what your guests should know about getting back to shore safe

A pre-planning safety strategy is important when skippers have guests on board. The guests should be informed about the boat's description to facilitate a quicker Coast Guard rescue when needed. At least one guest should know how to start the engine and steer and how to use the VHF radio.

Collisions among ships and boats can be prevented by posting a lookout on the deck. This is necessary even if high-tech radar and navigational aids are installed and used.
