Some people bruise more easily than others. Older people and women generally tend to bruise easily because of their thinner skin. The discoloration that accompanies a bruise is primarily the result of the healing process, but an application of ice may help forestall some of the discoloration.

Hyperbaric therapy, or the use of pressurized oxygen, has been employed since the 1930s, at first to help heal divers with the bends and more recently to treat a variety of ailments. For example, a 1993 treatment of injured rugby players indicated a 67% faster healing rate.
