The problems involving breaking in new motorcycle parts are described. These include piston-ring problems with newly-built vintage Triumph engines, and problems with new oils that contain additives. One way to solve oil problems is to use earlier-spec oils which contain less additives.

Increasing the power of a motorcycle engine puts stress on the gears. The first gear pinion tends to fail first. The problem may be solved by upgrading the gear oil. However, the gearboxes on most four-stroke motorcycles share the engine oil.
