Richard Condon's 'The Manchurian Candidate' is an exploration of the concepts of brainwashing associated with the Cold War. The cases of people arrested as spies volunteering confessions had created an interest in the idea of mind control. The notion of communists brainwashing people has been explored in other novels and movies also.
