Backpackers can explore the ghost town of Beveridge by hiking a trail in the Inyo Mountains Wilderness area of Southern California. The town has several abandoned mines and a waterfall at the bottom of the canyon. Wildlife in the area includes foxes, partridges and mountain lions.

Wayne National Forest is a 222,000-acre wilderness area in southeastern Ohio, that has many popular backpacking and hiking trails. The Wildcat Hollow Trail is a beautiful 14-mile trail that crosses a ridge and rocky streambeds.
