Ohio's Old Man's Cave: hide from the modern-day world and lose yourself on America's longest loop trail

A man describes his annual trek to Old Man's Cave in Ohio's Hocking Hills State Park. The cave is named after the Civil War fugitive Richard Rowe who hid in the 200-ft cave for years. The cave is on the Buckeye Trail, which is the longest loop trail system in the US.

The 30-mile Art Loeb Trail traverses North Carolina's Pisgah National Forest and the Shining Rock Wilderness area. The trail gains between 3,000-4,000 feet, depending on the direction traveled. Backpackers can catch the bloom of pinkshell azalea during mid-May.

Ontario's Bruce Trail: Canada's long trail is a timeless experience among 1,000-year-old trees clinging to limestone cliffs

Ontario's 530-mile Bruce Trail begins in Queenston Heights, and ends in Tobermory. The trail traverses the Niagara Escarpment which features limestone cliffs and ancient white cedar trees. The trail also passes streams, lakes and orchards.
