Article Abstract:
The advantages to using carbon fiber in the construction of a bicycle frame is its high stiffness-to-weight ratio, elimination of road vibrations and sleek one-piece design. The disadvantages are cost and unavailability of custom tubes. The Kestrel EMS carbon fiber frame is evaluated.

Titanium
Article Abstract:
Bicycles made out of titanium have good strength-to-weight ratios and offer smooth, steady rides. They also resist scratches and last a long time. The disadvantages of titanium frames are the cost and excessive flex. A frame made by Litespeed Titanium Inc is evaluated.

There is a great deal of disagreement over whether titanium, carbon fiber, steel or aluminum is the best material for a bicycle frame. Although 80% of bikes manufactured in 1991 were made of steel, in 1993 only 74% were. There is a trend towards mixing materials.
