Two well known catamaran designers explain the critical factors involved in the design and construction of cruising boats. They clearly state that catamaran design and construction is both art and science and for a good boat, one needs to make effective compromises, carefully control weight without adversely affecting strength and stability of the boat.

The catamaran comes in two shapes nimble sail shapes that require less power to accelerate and cat kite shapes that require sailing fast downward and gybing to keep the wind at 90 degrees than going dead downwind.
