Cell savers: new surgery methods recycle your own blood

A team of surgeons have developed a program that allows patients to undergo open-heart surgery without a blood transfusion. Drugs are used to increase red-blood cell production. A 'cell-saver' machine collects and cleans the blood, which lasts longer when returned to the patient.
