The UK consumer magazine market continues to rise, fuelled by increasing consumer demand, with spending on magazines reaching 1.4 billion pounds sterling in 1997, up 45.5% from 1990. Retail magazine sales for 1997 amounted to 1.28 billion pounds sterling, representing 91% of the market, with the remainder accounted for by subscriptions. The largest market segment is women's weeklies with retail sales of some 250 million pounds sterling. The sector with most growth is men's lifestyle, with market leader being FHM. It is expected that the retail magazine market will reach 1.46 million pounds sterling by 2001.
