There is common myth among skiers, that Eastern ski resorts are usually icy. This is untrue, East Coast resorts often have powder conditions. However, the ski areas tend to be smaller than Western resorts so skiers should get to the slopes early to take advantage of optimum conditions.

Skiing gear suitable for Alpine skiers includes wider skis, adaptable bindings, plastic boots, and climbing skins which keep the skier from sliding backward. Randonnee gear is designed more for the steep European terrain. Telemark gear with free-heel design, is more common in the US.

Telemark skiing uses different techniques from its downhill counterpart although both are grounded on the same basic principles. Instructions on how to accomplish the telemark turn are presented, along with a discussion on the differences between telemark and downhill skiing.
