Dove hunting is more pleasant and often more productive during cooler months. Hunters can benefit from hunting late in the season, or hunting the second season in states that have two. Water holes, flyways and feeding fields provide the best locations.

Wilderness deer and elk: high-quality hunting on public lands

Many public wilderness lands in the West offer hunters good prospects. It is best to hire a licensed guide for these hunts, since they provide horses and services. Twenty wilderness areas in such states as California, Oregon and Idaho are listed.

Western Nevada's Walker River system offers trophy, rainbow and brown trout fishing in abundance. Baits, lures and flies can be used. There is both public and private land, and many landowners will give visitors permission to fish.
