Doohan, Kocinski lead early GP tests

Four-time 500cc world motorcycle racing champion Mick Doohan topped the pre-Grand Prix test sessions held in Philip Island, Australia in Jan 1998. He rode an NSR500 and was tailed by 1997 World Superbike Champion John Kocinski. The use of unleaded fuel reportedly slowed down Doohan's bike.

Malaysian Grand Prix defending champions Michael Doohan and Max Biaggi suffessfully defended their titles using different Honda models. Doohan used a bike with a 'Screamer' engine while Biaggi utilized an Erv Kanemoto-tuned Honda.

Doohan draws crowd at Sugo

Five-time 500cc World Champion Doohan finished third at the World Superbike Championship in Sugo, Japan. He was dismayed with his performance which he attributes to his not being familiar with the four-stroke Honda RC45.
