Down to the bone: depression linked to osteoporosis

National Institute of Mental Health researchers found among 24 women studied that those with a history of major depression had a significantly lower bone mineral density than women with no history of depression. High levels of cortisol in depressed women may impair bone reconstruction.

Swedish research indicates that using nicotine-replacement therapy (NRT) for longer than a year may increase one's resistance to insulin and one's risk of hyperinsulinemia. Such metabolic changes can increase one's risk of heart disease and cancer.
