They booked Stad, the city of Amsterdam's 5-year-old goodwill vessel and the first new clipper ship to built in 130 years, with the idea of racing competitively against some of the quickest modern designs in the Rolex Transatlantic Challenge.

A goose among swans

Around 107 Swans made their way to idyllic outpost off Italy's western coast, 150 miles from Rome, to joust and spar In 2004, in a week of mostly point-to-point racing. The courses sent them through cuts and channels separating sparsely populated island burnished by the sun, past cascading little seaside villages like Palau and La Maddalena.
