Every crew should be prepared to handle a medical emergency while at sea. A medical officer should be selected, who would be in charge of assembling a medical kit and be prepared to use it. What the kit should contain and ways to promote on-board health are described.

Fatigue can be a real problem for those on voyages, especially for those travelling solo. Several harrowing stories are told of sailors who fell asleep at critical times, and ways to recognize and prevent excessive fatigue at sea are described.
