Land sailing, land yachting, or dirt sailing is a game that is hard to play well, a world where the apparent wind is always forward and boat speeds are multiples of true-wind speed. A discussion on the sport is presented, together with a description of the various boat designs available.

Jim DeWitt is a sailor as well as a painter, who started out as a sail maker, owned a boat and became a sailor. DeWitt paints pictures of boats for their owners or for sailing events for clubs during the day but in the mornings he designs sails and sails on the weekends.

Lake Stockton Yatch Club, Missouri, in the foothills of the Ozarks, turned out to be the biggest fleet ever with 33 boats for its thirty-ninth Governor's Cup in 2004. The Club drew the sailors from around the region, and it nurtured the fleet carefully.
