The embarrassment associated with making a mistake while docking a boat can be minimized by learning to employ a shifting technique. Learning to shift the stern or outboard in a series of forward and reverse motions can correct the problem. Further instruction on the technique is presented.

It's a docking thing; real men always back their boats into slips
Article Abstract:
Docking a boat stern-to makes for stable mooring and easier boarding, and it enables simpler shore-power connections, but it is obviously more difficult to judge position and speed when docking backwards. The real reason most men and some women dock stern-to is because it is macho.
