Sailboats participating in the Around Alone race are equipped with Trimble Galaxy Inmarsat-C terminals. During emergencies, sailors can immediately radio race officials that they are in distress. Unlike SSB systems, Inmarsat-C is not affected by the weather or communications traffic.

Article Abstract:
Hurricane Andrew cut a narrow but devastating path through the Bahamas, causing a storm surge as high as 18 feet in Northern Eleuthera. In Florida the hurricane damaged an estimated 1,000 boats over 30 feet long. Preparations by boat owners were either ineffectual or nonexistent.
