It is now clear that lack of physical activity plays a much larger role in obesity than food intake. Dieting is truly effective for the long-term when it is combined with physical activity because it burns fat tissue. Added benefits of exercise include increased energy and lower stress levels.

An advocacy campaign undertaken by the staff and readership of Prevention magazine has convinced Congress to create a National Walking Week. Other items on walking enthusiasts' agenda for positive change include safer traffic laws and more sidewalks.

Planned communities throughout Europe and in some US cities provide sidewalks for people to walk safely. The US should promote a National Walking Week to make people and politicians more aware of the need for safe walking areas.
