Hurricane Katrina caused damage to many sailing clubs on the Gulf Coast, with sustained winds of 145 mph driving surges that in some places were nearly 30 feet high. Some of the sailing clubs which were damaged include Tulane University Sailing Club, Fairhope Yacht Club and Southern Yacht Club.

A sea breeze is a local weather pattern that develops over the course of a day when air over land adjacent to the sea becomes heated by the sun. Some guidelines on how sailors can predict the strength and direction of the sea breeze using the clouds and sun for guidance are presented.
