The case involving the collision of a ship owned by Pan Ocean Shipping Co Ltd with a sailboat, which caused the death of a family except for the mother, involves the Death on High Seas Act (DOHSA). DOHSA limits compensation to projected lifetime earnings and cost of the sunken boat.

The hunt for a killer ship
Article Abstract:
The disappearance of the sailboat Melinda Lee which was engaged on a five-year circumnavigation spurred a search for the ship which collided with it. Investigations resulted in the discovery of Pan Grace, owned by Pan Ocean Shipping Co Ltd, as the culprit.

Judith Sleavin is the sole survivor of an accident in which a ship collided with the sailboat Melinda Lee. The collision occurred on Nov 24, 1995 and has resulted in the loss of her family, her boat and almost her life.
