There are many situations in competitive tennis which are mentally stressing. These mental obstacles should be confronted and overcome with alternative strategies using mental toughness. Some of the problem situations are: playing with a cheating opponent, playing against a condescending opponent and playing before an unruly crowd.

Tennis players can improve their mental toughness by building up their emotional strength and resiliency. To build emotional strength, a player should not avoid a crisis, although they should avoid unneeded stress. Resiliency can be improved by thinking positively after mistakes.
