Ibuprofen inhibits skeletal muscle hypertrophy in rats
Article Abstract:
A study examines whether cyclooxygenase (COX) activity is necessary for overload-induced growth of adult rat skeletal muscle, and whether nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity is involved in upregulation of COX messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) expression in skeletal muscle. Results reveal that COX-2 expression is induced in overloaded rat plantaris muscle, and that endogenous NOS activity is involved in this induction, a finding that is physiologically significant, as inhibition of COX activity hinders overload-induced hypertrophy of adult skeletal muscle.

Effect of hand paddles on anaerobic energy release during supramaximal swimming
Article Abstract:
The use of hand paddles during swimming increases speed without altering metabolic rates. Measurements of energy release and oxygen uptake during swim sprints yielded higher water flow rates without a change in oxygen usage in six male college swimmers when they used paddles. Swimming with paddles may be a more efficient way to propel yourself forward without expending more energy.
