Charlie Britton joined the company of Ray MacLeod to build a 27-footer boat, Tartan 27, which is recognized as well-built and low-maintenance family cruiser that also did well on the racecourse. Due to rising demand he opened a second plant in Hamlet, North Carolina, and began to build the Tartan 30, 34, and 37.
