Historians described Long Island Sound as a 'cask of good liquor' in the early 18th century when it was developing into an important commercial waterway. Over 1,400 ships and almost 2,200 barges sail through the inland sea annually. Most ships take advantage of the tidal currents in the south.

Swedish sailor Stig Lindgren was on his third singlehanded circumnavigation when he hit a coral reef off Eritrea and damaged his boat beyond repair. The mishap had a happy ending when he was rescued by a Navy helicopter from the USS Inchon.
