Moral functioning in sport: an achievement goal perspective

This article examines the relationship between achievement goals, moral functioning, and attitudes toward injurious behaviors among college basketball players. Findings indicate that male athletes have reduced moral functioning, increased ego orientation, decreased task focus, and are more approving of unsportsmanlike conduct when compared to female athletes in the study.

Motivation in physical activity contexts: the relationship of perceived motivational climate to intrinsic motivation and self-efficacy
Article Abstract:
A study of 285 college-age students in beginning tennis classes showed that perceptions of a mastery climate (goal-oriented) in the classes correlated to greater enjoyment, effort, perceived competence, and self-efficacy, and related inversely to tension. Dispositional goal orientation and perceived motivational climate (MC) predicted males' instrinsic motivation, but only mastery MC predicted self-efficacy. Performance MC most strongly predicted females' intrinsic motivation and self-efficacy.
