Waltrip began racing in 1972 and became well-known for his brash outspoken ways. He was called 'Jaws.' Changes in his life besides aging, included a daughter and a turn to religion. His skill, and charisma have endured, making him a well-respected elder of the stock car racing world.

Ernie Irvan, automobile driver for the Robert Yates racing team, became one of auto racing's miracles when he recovered from a devastating crash at the Michigan International Speedway. Given only a 10% chance of surviving, Irvan was racing again in 13 months.
