The 5th Around Alone singlehanded round-the-world sailboat race was won by Italian Giovanni Soldini for the Class I category. The Class II winner was J.P. Moulinge. The race was highlighted by mishaps, injuries and comebacks. Soldini also set a new record with his overall elapsed time of 116 days 20 hrs 7 min and 59 sec.

Three-time French campaigner Isabelle Autissier, skipper of PRB, finally won the Around Alone race after Englishman Mike Golding's Team Group 4 met an accident. Autissier's win continues the remarkable run by French skippers of winning every solo round-the-world race in the last 20 years.

Italian sailor Giovanni Soldini became the first non-French winner of the solo round-the-world race when he finished the competition in the early hours of May 8, 1999. He won the race with his 60-foot boat, FILA.
