Nutrient intake of elite sailors during a solitary long-distance offshore race
Article Abstract:
Long-distance offshore sailing races have an effect on body weight regardless of nutrient intake prior to racing. In a study of elite sailors training for solitary offshore races, energy intake was approximately 19% higher than nontraining sailors. Dietary ratios averaged 50% carbohydrate, 35% fat and 15% protein. Despite increased energy consumption, sailors still lost body weight during the race.
