A small but steadily growing number of recreational boaters in the US prefers to cruise in fall and winter, when conditions are cold, but crowds are absent. Tips on off-season cruising include using space heaters, carrying ample fuel and safety supplies, and learning to navigate in fog.

Extra care should be provided in drilling holes on boats to prevent water leakage onto electronic or wiring harnesses. Unlike cars and houses, boats are open to weather and are made of mostly fiberglass which is susceptible to spider cracks when its integrity is compromised.
